Nothing to drive and almost nothing to walk: a local driver takes you up by motorcycle in about 8 minutes, and the last 10 are on foot. It's the easiest way to the viewpoint.
The viewpoint is 5,036 m and Cusco sits at 3,399 m, so give yourself two full days in the city first. You barely walk on this tour, but the altitude is the same. The entrance, S/ 30 per person, is paid in cash on the day and is not included in the tour price.
What to know before riding to Rainbow Mountain by motorcycle
It's a full-day trip from Cusco to Vinicunca, Peru's famous Rainbow Mountain, where a local driver takes you up by motorcycle and you walk only the last 10 minutes. No trek and no ATV to handle: you sit back, hold on and watch the Andes go by.
Picture it: the van stops at the foot of the mountain, a local driver hands you a helmet, and minutes later you're climbing a dirt track past grazing llamas and alpacas, with Ausangate's snowcapped peak ahead. A short walk, and the stripes of red, ochre, turquoise and lavender open up in front of you.
You don't drive anything. At the trailhead, you get a helmet and ride on the back of a motorcycle with a local driver who knows the track.
Is Rainbow Mountain hard? On foot, it can be: the classic trail is about 3.5 km each way, and most people need under two hours to climb it. On the ATV tours, you drive the machine yourself. This tour asks the least of you: a local driver does both.
Riding up doesn't mean the mountain asks nothing of you. At 5,036 m the air holds about half the oxygen you're used to, so take the final 10 minutes slowly, stop whenever you like, and let your guide know how you feel. The tour carries emergency oxygen, just in case.
May to September is the dry season, with the clearest skies, and June is the most reliable month. From November to April, afternoons bring rain, and snow can hide the stripes, most often from December to March. Nobody can promise the weather up here, but the early start gets you to the mountain in the morning.
It's your day if you:
Not suitable for children under 6, pregnant travelers or people with heart problems.

Yes. On this tour a local driver takes you up by motorcycle in about 8 minutes, and you walk only the last 10 minutes to the Vinicunca viewpoint. There's no trek, and nothing to drive yourself.
• The van takes you from Cusco to the foot of the mountain, about 3.5 hours with breakfast on the way • At the trailhead you put on a helmet and ride as a passenger with a local driver • From where the motorcycle stops, a short, steep path leads to the viewpoint at 5,036 m (16,522 ft): about 10 minutes at your own pace • The classic hike to the same viewpoint is about 3.5 km each way, and most people need under two hours to climb it
For most travelers, yes: few places let you stand in front of a whole striped mountainside, with Ausangate's glacier behind it. It's a long day and a high one, so it's worth it if you can handle both.
• Worth it if you: want the view itself, have spent two full days in Cusco first, and don't mind a 3:30 AM start for a 13-hour day • Think twice if you: arrive in Cusco the day before, or travel in the rainy season expecting clear skies. From November to April, rain and snow can hide the colors • Best months: May to September, with June the most reliable • On this tour the climb is taken out of the equation: the motorcycle does it, and you walk 10 minutes Nobody can promise the weather at 5,036 m.
About 10 minutes each way, on a short, steep path from where the motorcycle stops to the viewpoint. The rest of the day you're in the van or riding as a passenger.
• Up: about 10 minutes, at your own pace. Stop whenever you need to • Down: the same path back to the motorcycle • The path is short but steep, and at 5,036 m most people get out of breath, so walk slowly • Wear shoes with good grip. The path can be loose or icy
It's the famous one: Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain in the photos, in the Cusco region of Peru, with its viewpoint at 5,036 m. Other striped mountains near Cusco, like Pallay Punchu, are different peaks.
• Vinicunca goes by many names: Rainbow Mountain, the Painted Mountain of Peru, the Seven Color Mountain, the Mountain of Seven Colors, or Montaña de 7 Colores in Spanish • It's in the Pitumarca district, about 3.5 hours by road from Cusco, beside Ausangate (6,384 m), the region's highest peak, which is why some call it the Ausangate rainbow mountain • How high is Rainbow Mountain, Peru? The viewpoint sits at 5,036 m (16,522 ft), the official figure for Vinicunca's elevation • Pallay Punchu, near Layo, is a different mountain: a sharp striped ridge at about 4,780 m, with far fewer visitors. We run a separate tour there • Palccoyo is another striped area near Vinicunca, also a different site
You ride as a passenger behind a local driver who knows the track, wearing a helmet, for about 8 minutes each way. The tour also carries emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit.
• You don't drive: you sit behind the driver and hold on • The route is a dirt track up the mountainside, ridden at the pace the terrain allows • Helmets are included, and they're worn on every ride • Tell your guide before the ride if you have back or neck problems, or feel unwell from the altitude • Not suitable for children under 6, pregnant travelers or people with heart problems
Yes. The motorcycle with a local driver, up and back, is included in the US$ 78 tour price, with your helmet. The only thing you pay on the day is the S/ 30 Rainbow Mountain entrance, in cash.
Included: hotel pick-up in Cusco's historic center, transport, the motorcycle with a local driver and a helmet, a local guide, breakfast and buffet lunch, hot drinks, and emergency oxygen with a first-aid kit. Not included: the S/ 30 entrance (about USD 8), paid in cash on site, plus tips and anything extra you buy. Questions before booking? Message us on WhatsApp at +51 926 445 634.
Older travelers and teenagers, yes: the motorcycle does the climb, and the walk is 10 minutes. It's not suitable for children under 6, pregnant travelers or people with heart problems.
• Older travelers: the walk is short, but the altitude is the same for everyone. Two full days in Cusco first make a big difference • Children 6 and up and teenagers: they ride as passengers like everyone else • With a heart or lung condition, see a doctor before booking • The day is long: a 3:30 AM pick-up and back around 4:30 PM, with most of the time in the van
Take the motorcycle if you want to do nothing but enjoy the view. Choose an ATV if you'd like to drive yourself. Hike if the walk is part of the adventure. All three reach the same Vinicunca viewpoint.
• Motorcycle with a local driver (this tour): about 8 minutes as a passenger, then a 10-minute walk. The easiest way up • ATV: you drive your own, about 25 minutes, then a 10-minute walk. No experience needed. Some ATV tours add the Red Valley • Hike: about 3.5 km each way from 4,600 m, under two hours up for most people. The classic way, and the cheapest Whichever you choose, the viewpoint is at 5,036 m, so acclimatize in Cusco first.
