Gratuities
Travel insurance
What to Bring
Gloves: at 3 AM on an ATV, they're the one thing people regret leaving behind
Warm layers you can peel off (jacket, thermal top and leggings, wool hat): the start is freezing, and by midday the van is warm
A buff or neck gaiter, for the wind and dust on the ride
Shoes with good grip: the short walk to the top is steep and loose, sometimes icy
Sunscreen, UV sunglasses and lip balm
A small daypack only: luggage and large bags aren't allowed
Cash in soles: S/ 30 for the entrance, in small notes
Passport or ID
Water and a few snacks
The viewpoint is 5,036 m and Cusco sits at 3,399 m, so give yourself two full days in the city first. You barely walk on this tour, but the altitude is the same. The entrance, S/ 30 per person, is paid in cash on the day and is not included in the tour price.
Things to Know
Vinicunca altitude, weather and what to know before riding an ATV to Rainbow Mountain
Difficulty:EasyThe ATV does the climbing. The only walking is about 10 minutes up a short, steep path to the viewpoint, at your own pace, or a few flat minutes to a second lookout.
Riding the ATV:A calm group ride, not a race. Everyone follows the guide at the same speed, and riding fast or overtaking isn't allowed. The ATVs are automatic, and you get practice laps first.
Altitude:The viewpoint is 5,036 m (16,522 ft), the official MINCETUR figure and the one on the sign at the top. Cusco is 3,399 m. Riding saves you the effort, not the altitude. The tour carries emergency oxygen.
Acclimatization:Spend two full days in Cusco first. You barely walk here, but the altitude still affects you.
Duration:About 12 hours. Pick-up from 3:00 AM, back at the Plaza de Armas between 2:30 and 3:00 PM.
Cold:The 3:00 AM start is freezing, and you ride in near-freezing wind. Gloves, a hat and warm layers are essential. Buy gloves in Cusco, not at the base.
Best season:May to September is the driest and clearest, and June is the most reliable month. From November to April, expect afternoon rain and snow that can hide the colors, most often from December to March.
Weather:Changeable, and nobody can guarantee it. It can be sunny at breakfast and snowing at the viewpoint.
Entrance:S/ 30 per person, not included in the price, paid in cash on site. Bring it in small notes.
Not suitable for:Children under 5 and travelers over 70. Drivers must be 18 or older; younger travelers can ride as passengers on a double ATV.
Luggage:Luggage and large bags aren't allowed. Bring a small daypack only.
Drop-off:Everyone is dropped at the Plaza de Armas, not at individual hotels.
Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour from Cusco: The Day at a Glance
It's a full-day Vinicunca tour from Cusco to Rainbow Mountain, also known as Peru's 7 Colors Mountain or the colored mountain, where an ATV does the climbing and you walk only about 10 minutes at the top. No Red Valley and no trek: just the mountain, the ride and the view.
Picture it: the engine hums under you as the track climbs across the open highlands, alpacas lift their heads as the group rolls past, and Ausangate's glacier fills the horizon. You park just below the ridge, walk a few minutes up, and the stripes of red, ochre, turquoise and lavender open up in front of you.
3:00 AM pick-up at your hotel in Cusco, with breakfast in Cusipata on the way
About 25 minutes by ATV up to Rainbow Mountain
A short 10-minute walk to the viewpoint, and about 45 minutes at the top
Back down by ATV, a buffet lunch in Cusipata, and back in Cusco by mid-afternoon
Rainbow Mountain Without Hiking: Just a 10-Minute Walk
On this tour the ATV takes you to just below the Vinicunca viewpoint, and from there it's a short walk of about 10 minutes.
To the top: a short, steep path to the main viewpoint at 5,036 m (16,522 ft)
Rather not climb? A flat path of a few minutes leads to another lookout, and the mountain is already in view where the ATVs park
Several spots at the top for photos, with Ausangate (6,384 m / 20,945 ft) across the valley
Compared with the hike: the classic trail takes most people under two hours up
Rainbow Mountain Quad Bike Ride: No Experience Needed
No experience is needed. The ATVs are automatic, and before setting off you get a briefing and a few practice laps on flat ground.
Single or double ATVs: ride your own, or sit behind someone as a passenger
The group rides together behind the guide, at the guide's pace
It's a calm, scenic ride across the highlands, not a race: speeding isn't allowed
What the ATV doesn't change is the altitude. The viewpoint sits at 5,036 m and Cusco at 3,399 m (11,152 ft), so even the 10-minute walk leaves most people short of breath. Spend two full days in Cusco first. The tour carries emergency oxygen.
Best Time for the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour
The dry season, May to September, has the clearest skies, and June is the most reliable month. From November to April, afternoons bring rain, and snow can cover the stripes, most often from December to March.
The 3:00 AM start gets you to the mountain early in the morning. Nobody can promise the weather up here, but the colors are at their strongest under a clear sky.

Vinicunca ATV Tour FAQ: Rainbow Mountain Without the Hike
We run three ATV tours to Vinicunca from Cusco. This one rides to Rainbow Mountain alone, with a 10-minute walk. One adds the Red Valley by ATV, and another pairs the ATV with a two-hour hike.
• Rainbow Mountain only, by ATV (this tour): about 25 minutes each way on the ATV, a 10-minute walk, back in Cusco by mid-afternoon. US$ 69 per person.
• Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley by ATV: both lookouts, still barely any walking, and a slightly longer day.
• ATV through the Red Valley plus a hike: part of the way by ATV, then about two hours on foot to both lookouts.
Whichever you pick, check what the price includes. On this tour, the S/ 30 entrance is paid in cash on the day.
Look for a company in Peru's official MINCETUR directory, with recent reviews that praise its guides and a price that tells you which fees you'll pay on the day. Our local team checks all three.
• Registration: the company should be listed in MINCETUR's official directory of travel agencies and tour operators. Our local team is.
• Reviews: read the ones for the ATV tour itself, not just the company. This page shows them from Tripadvisor, Google and GetYourGuide.
• Safety: a helmet, a briefing and practice laps before you set off, and a guide who rides with the group. The tour also carries emergency oxygen.
• Price: this tour is US$ 69 per person, plus the S/ 30 entrance in cash. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a full refund.
We sell this tour, so read this with that in mind. Your day is run by our local team. Questions first? Message us on WhatsApp at +51 926 445 634.
Gloves, a warm hat and layers for a freezing 3:00 AM start, sunglasses and sunscreen, shoes with grip, S/ 30 in cash for the entrance, your passport, and water. Bring a small daypack: large bags aren't allowed.
• Gloves: you ride in near-freezing wind, and riders say they're the one thing they regret forgetting
• Warm layers you can peel off: jacket, thermal top and leggings, wool hat
• A buff or neck gaiter for the wind and dust
• Shoes with good grip for the short, steep walk to the top
• Sunscreen, UV sunglasses and lip balm
• S/ 30 in small notes for the entrance, plus your passport or ID
• Water and a few snacks
The helmet comes with the ATV. Leave luggage at your hotel: only a small daypack is allowed.
This Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco takes about 12 hours. Pick-up is from 3:00 AM, and you're back at the Plaza de Armas between 2:30 and 3:00 PM. The ATV ride itself is about 25 minutes each way.
• About 4 hours to the ATV base, including breakfast in Cusipata
• About 25 minutes on the ATV up to Rainbow Mountain
• A 10-minute walk to the viewpoint, and about 45 minutes at the top
• About 25 minutes back down on the ATV
• About 4 hours back to Cusco, including a buffet lunch in Cusipata
Tours that add the Red Valley take longer.
Spend two full days in Cusco first, skip alcohol for 48 hours, drink water, and walk slowly at the top. Riding saves your legs, not the altitude: the viewpoint is 5,036 m. The tour carries emergency oxygen.
• Acclimatize: two full days in Cusco (3,399 m) before going up to 5,036 m (16,522 ft). A fast rise in altitude is the main risk factor (NHS)
• Being fit doesn't protect you: the CDC says fitness has no effect on the risk of altitude illness
• Avoid alcohol for your first 48 hours at altitude (CDC)
• Headache with nausea, dizziness or tiredness? Tell your guide. Going down is the best treatment (Wilderness Medical Society)
• Confusion, loss of coordination or breathlessness at rest are an emergency
The tour carries emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit. With a heart or lung condition, see a doctor before booking.

May to September, the dry season, has the clearest skies, and June is the most reliable month. From November to April, expect afternoon rain and snow that can hide the colors. Vinicunca mountain tours run all year.
• May to September: dry season, with the clearest skies and the strongest colors. June is the most reliable month
• November to April: rainy season, with rain most afternoons. Late January is the wettest
• Snow can fall in any month, but it's most frequent from December to March (SENAMHI), and it can cover the stripes completely
• It's near freezing at the top all year, so pack gloves whatever the month
Nobody can promise the weather up here. The 3:00 AM start gets you to the mountain early in the morning.

Such an excellent way to see rainbow mountain without having to hike. Riding the ATVs was fun and the guides made sure we were all safe. We had plenty of time to view rainbow mountain and take photos. The guide offered to take photos and was vigilant when it came to safety regarding the altitude as well. Breakfast and lunch was good!

Amazing! We choose to do the 3am tour and it was the best decision! We were one of the first vans that arrived in the base of Rainbow Mountain. They’ve teached us to ride the ATV and the surroundings were amazingly beautiful!!! After reaching the rainbow mountain you have the option to hike 10 min up to the top or go with the flat path. We’ve had 45 min there! The breakfast and lunch was cozy and tasty! We loved it, super recommend!

Excelente tour
Muchas gracias nuevamente a Rogelio 🙌🏼

Exceeded my expectations
We had a wonderful trip up Rainbow mountain! The wheather was great and the Red Valley was stunning. Views of snowcapped Andes in the back, very beautiful. I loved taking the ATV to have a shorter hike. Rogelio was the best guid we have had the whole trip! He is very funny.
The only downside is getting up so dang early. There are no less tourists, I wish there was an option to go later in the day

Amazing Experience well worth the early wake up
We had an amazing experience on The Ultimate: Red Valley + Rainbow Mountain by ATV — no hiking, and a huge part of that was thanks to our wonderful guide, Rojher.
From the very beginning, Rojher was incredibly patient, kind, and helpful. I accidentally left my phone in the taxi that picked us up from our hotel, and Rojher went above and beyond to help me get it back. He made multiple phone calls and sent messages to the taxi driver, patiently waited with me until the driver returned, and made sure I was able to check the car and recover my phone.
Since the group had already left for breakfast, Rojher even arranged a taxi for my partner and me so we could catch up with the rest of the group. His kindness and willingness to help turned what could have been a very stressful situation into something much easier to handle.
Once we arrived for the ATV ride, Rojher continued to be attentive every step of the way. Our group was small, and he made sure everyone was safe, comfortable, and enjoying the experience. He led us to both Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley and was always there to guide and assist us along the way.
The scenery was incredible, and riding the ATVs made the experience even more memorable. But honestly, what made the day truly special was having a guide like Rojher. His patience, kindness, and genuine care for his guests really stood out.
Thank you, Rojher, for making our experience so wonderful! We highly recommend this tour, and especially Rojher as a guide.

10/10
Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley with Rogelio — 10/10, would do again. The climb is no joke (altitude hits different up there 😅) but Rogelio kept everyone laughing and moving at a good pace. He clearly knows and loves this place — shared so many cool stories about the mountains and local culture along the way.
Rainbow Mountain is unreal in person, colors you just can't fully capture in photos. Red Valley was an awesome bonus stop too, way less crowded and just as gorgeous. Rogelio even grabbed some great summit pics for us.
If you're heading to Rainbow Mountain, book with Rogelio. Total legend, made the whole trip 🙌

The tour guides and drivers were great, but the bus was necessarily early in my opinion, especially as we saw other groups just arriving at rainbow mountain as we were leaving. The ATV bit was disappointing as well, very short and the guides seem to be opposed to going any faster than 3 mph, which was frustrating and boring.

We did the Rainbow Valley day tour with MC Peru Expeditions, and it was superbly organised and our guide Rogelio was amazing and knowledgeable. Had an early start at 3.45pm, however the advantage being that you are on of the first to get toVinicunca Mountain (avoiding traffic, also on the return).
Also lucked out as it was a beautiful sunny day. Breakfast and lunch at same place, had vegetarian options. Were a group of 12, and Rogelio made sure wartime was included and speaking in both Spanish and English. He made the journey enjoyable and big kudos to the driver too.
Highly recommend using these guys, and ask for Rogelio!

It was an incredible experience! The views to and from the mountain were jaw dropping and then the experience of taking the bikes up to the top, exploring the rainbow mountain, and riding back down is something that will remain with me for a long time. The breakfast and lunch buffet choices were also good. Our tour guide, Luis, was superb, engaging and very accommodating. I highly recommend this tour, especially for those who have only been in Cusco for a day or so as it really helps taking the ATV all the way up rather than having to hike 40 mins of the way up.

Overall Rainbow Mountain is an awesome excursion and a must-see while in Cusco. Riding ATVs instead of walking is definitely the way to go! The pros: Prompt pickup at my hotel Food was great for breakfast and lunch The cons: Our guide spoke very little English. To the extent we couldn’t understand anything about the Rainbow mountain once we arrived. Hidden S/25 entrance fee per person not advertised prior, randomly collected on the bus ride Overall riding an ATV to rainbow mountain was awesome and worth the $80 USD, this tour just didn’t earn 5 stars from me due to those cons.

ATVing up Rainbow Mountain was a lot of fun. The guides were great. The ATV takes you just below the summit lookout, it’s a 5-10 minute hike to get to the top, or a 5 minute flat walk to another lookout. Everything was well organized. The stops for breakfast and lunch were good. My only complaint is the limited air conditioning in the van on the way back to Cusco. By midday, the sun is strong and heats up the van quickly. The air conditioning cycled on and off and it got pretty hot in the van making for a long somewhat uncomfortable ride back to the city.

Amazing experience! The ATV's were very user friendly. It was so gorgeous for travel through the Andean country side. I took a tour to Ausangate glacier, where I was able to hike part of the mountain and I personally took a quick swim in one of the 7 glacial lakes. Jorge was an amazing guide who was very friendly and welcoming. He spoke good English and made sure I was comfortable throughout the trip and made sure to take amazing photos. Aside from a few caretakers, Jorge and I seemed to be the only people in the entire national park. This was truly one of the best things I did while I was in Peru. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a more unique experience while in Peru!

we had a great day trip to Rainbow Mountain and as a scenic bonus the glacier capped mountains behind. Early start, however was well worth the amazing sight that is Rainbow mountain. Have never driven an ATV before, but simple to operate and time to practice before heading off. Lots of time at the top to wander around and then return by ATV to the bus for transit home. Very scenic bus trip home, unlike the darkness on the way there!! Would definitely recommend.

The pick up coordination was chaotic with differing information from our guide and our pick up driver where to meet. Once we finally made it to the bus and started driving about 45 minutes in we stopped with no communication form our guide Noemi as to why and wauted 1 hour because she forgot 2 participants in Cusco... After they arrived we coninued to drive for 30 minutes just to stop again to fuel the bus. Eventually we were horribly delayed and had to rush on the rainbowmountain. Noemis timekeeping was really poor and we barely got any guiding at the location.

We booked the early tour at 3am and were super happy. I don't know if we were lucky but the van was not full so that made it so much more comfortable to travel and sleep in the morning! The way that the tour is structured is great - the travelling really feels okay and not too much. Also, great selection for breakfast and lunch! About the ATVs - omg it was fantastic!! Rainbow mountain tour experience was amazing though the weather was little bit cloudy and bit of snowing as well . But our guide Royer made sure we didn’t have any difficulty and made sure that we had wonderful time during the entire trip. Due to the high altitude, I felt slight discomfort in driving the ATV, but Royer took care of that driving part and also helped me from getting down the high point of the mountain. And also my sincere thanks to the driver (forgot his name.. sorry). The breakfast and buffet lunch were not satisfactory and not enough options for vegetarians like us.

The female guide was professional and very kind. However, the driver was driving recklessly during heavy traffic, which made many of the passengers feel unsafe. We also weren’t informed in advance about how cold it would be up in the mountains this time of year, so we were forced to buy extra clothing to stay warm since we weren’t properly dressed for the weather. Additionally, during the winter season you can’t really see much — it’s essentially just a snow-covered mountain. It would be much better to visit in the summer. Honestly, the fact that this tour still operates in the winter feels a bit misleading.

Long journey on very bumpy roads. Breakfast and lunch were good. The ATV ride up to rainbow mountain was a great alternative to walking but the instructors were quite aggressive when demanding money while the tour guide was out of earshot. The tour guide was great but the group was predominantly Spanish speaking. The hike up to the viewpoint was quite challenging due to the snow and ice but the view was worth the effort.

Great experience! I’m so glad I booked with this staff. Sergio was the best host we could have asked for. He really cares about all his guests and wants everyone to get the best experience. The driver was great and got us everywhere very timely. Premium experience for anyone considering.

Our trip to Pallay Poncho was amazing and our tour guide was excellent! The stops for breakfast and lunch during the drive were great and the weather was beautiful.

A fantastic tour guide,a fantastic experience. A Very considerate tour leader. Although the journey was long,We were lucky enough to see Rainbow Mountain under the sunlight. Encouraged by the guide, we also climbed to the top and saw the most beautiful scenery.Riding an ATV on the winding mountain road was a new ecperience and felt very exciting. Breakfast amd Lunch on this trip were both excellent 。

The day was early but worth it. We had both a buffet style breakfast and lunch which was nice. Taking ATVs up to Rainbow Mountain was clutch. I definitely recommend that over hiking. It was cold and slightly raining/snow so bring warm gear. More time is spent driving than actually being at Rainbow Mountain so plan for that, but it was nice getting back to Cusco in the afternoon and still having the remainder of the day to myself. Great views and I recommend this trip for anyone looking for a fun adventure!

The breakfast and lunch were fantastic and really helped break up the 3 hour drive each way. We were the first group there so it was not crowded and by the time we left, hundreds of people were there. Highly recommend this tour and going with the 3am pick up time.

I had an incredible experience visiting Rainbow Mountain today. The tour started with a hotel pickup, and the transportation was clean and comfortable. Since it was very early and quite cold, they provided blankets, which was a really thoughtful touch. Choosing the 3 a.m. pickup might sound a little crazy, but it turned out to be the best decision we made. When we arrived at Rainbow Mountain, there was practically no one there, and we were able to enjoy the views and take amazing photos without any crowds. Both breakfast and lunch were buffet-style with a great variety of food. Our tour guide, Jose Luis, was fantastic—very attentive, always checking on everyone, and explaining every detail along the way. Overall, I had a wonderful time and I 100% recommend this tour.

This was an awesome tour! The company responds very quickly and keeps you up to date on pick up times which was nice. It’s really easy to communicate with the guides through WhatsApp. Everything was well organized and planned out perfectly. The van we all rode in was comfortable and even had USB ports for charging our devices. Breakfast and lunch were delicious. It was buffet style with lots of choices. The guide was so nice! He constantly checked on all of us to make sure we were okay, and he even took awesome pictures for all of us on the tour too. The ATV ride was so fun. We rode the double ATV. The scenery was breathtaking! It’s a short 7 minute walk up the hill to get the classic view of rainbow mountain, but you can see the mountain also from where you park the ATVs if you didn’t want to climb higher. After acclimating for a few days in Cusco, the elevation wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be. It was mostly felt walking up inclines. We highly recommend this tour!

Guide and experience overall was great. The ATV’s were a ton of fun. Transportation is rough mainly because of the roads so that will be expected on any tour. Food for breakfast/ lunch was ok. We didn’t go on the tour for the food so didn’t knock them for it. They were very accommodating. Would recommend!

We did the Red Valley and Rainbow Mountain tour. We did it by ATV and it was amazing. The guide was great! Explained everything and made sure we were very safe. The lunch and breakfast were incredibly delicious. You could eat as much as you wanted. It was also super healthy. Truly a top-notch tour, especially if you have already done a lot of hikes in Peru; this is a wonderfully different way to do things!

Great trip! Exactly what we wanted. Only small glitch in that we were on a Spanish speaking only group. Made us stretch our language skills.

Wow this place is worth the 3am wake up. ATV ride is fun. Our guide Carlos is the best explained everything. My wife suffered a bit of altitude sickness on the walk up and Carlos never left her side. If you have opportunity to go to this tour go for it.
